After creating a subconscious association of bloons as something foreign, players are now required to think of them as enemies. The goal of the game is to try to stop enemy “bloons” from crossing through the maze by building towers, which shoot at them as they pass. The game has three difficulty options: easy, medium, and hard.
There are 8 levels to choose from, four of which need to be unlocked by beating the first 4. Tower defense games are part of the sub-genre of real-time strategy (RTS) computer games, which are a sub-genre of strategy video games. I will elaborate on this in the following paragraphs, but first I will give a brief description of the game basics. Once this association is created within the mind of the player it is easy to see how the goal of the game would feed into a negative interpretation. This might be a far-reaching idea, but the misspelling of the word gives players a feeling of unfamiliarity, which could be interpreted as “foreign”. While it is obvious by nature that this game promotes a warlike simulation, I would like to argue that there are several underlying subtleties that might create a subconscious negative feeling towards foreigners.īeginning with the title of the game, tower defense gives players a clear idea of the game mechanics, but what about “bloons”. Characteristic of RTS games, BTD3 players must overcome strategic, tactical, and sometimes logistical challenges. According to previous version users, the newer version offered more tracks, better towers and upgraded gameplay mechanics. I had never played the earlier versions, however, the general sentiment is that I didn’t miss much.
I was first introduced to the game at its launch in early September 2008. The game brags 25,955 fans on Facebook, a number that has grown by approximately 300 people in one week.
